Sinopsis
"The Fall Guy (titled Profession Danger in Latin America and The Specialist in Spain) is an American comedy, suspense, and action film directed by David Leitch, written by Drew Pearce, and starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. It is an adaptation of the 1980s television series of the same name created by Glen A. Larson, starring Lee Majors. The film was released on May 1, 2024, by Universal Pictures.
The film follows a washed-up and down-on-his-luck stuntman who finds himself working on a movie set with the star for whom he used to double years ago and who replaced him. The star then disappears.
The movie begins with Hollywood stuntman Colt Seavers talking about how important people have been in his line of business throughout the history of film and television. Colt takes a lot of beatings as a double, but he considers it worth it because he is in love with camera operator Jody Moreno, who aspires to become a director. In his latest project, Colt is doing stunts for the major Hollywood actor Tom Ryder. Colt straps on a harness to film a scene in which he takes a big fall, but something goes wrong and Colt falls to the ground, seriously injuring his back. He walks away from the business and from Jody.
Eighteen months later, Colt works as a valet and hasn't spoken to Jody since the incident. He is discovered by a former colleague who refers to him as "the fall guy" after the incident, so Colt aggressively brings his car back and does donuts in front of him. Later, Gail Meyer, the film producer who frequently works with Ryder, reaches out to Colt. She offers Colt the opportunity to double for Ryder in a new epic science fiction film called Metalstorm and wants Colt to join the production in Sydney, Australia, but Colt refuses until Gail informs him that Jody is directing the film.
Colt arrives on set and reunites with his friend, stunt coordinator Dan Tucker, who informs him that his first major stunt is a cannon roll, which distresses Colt because he fears messing up in front of Jody. The team proceeds with the cannon stunt, with Colt's car tumbling across a beach before he gives a thumbs up to let the team know he's okay (a stuntman habit, as he claims). When Jody sees that Colt is the the stuntman, she is not too happy to see him after such a long time away, contradicting Gail's earlier claim that Jody specifically asked for Colt. For their next trick, they set Colt on fire and throw him against a wall. Colt and Jody then attempt to analyze the scene while bickering about their relationship in front of the team, and most people seem to be on Jody's side.
Gail visits Colt in his trailer to let him know that Ryder has gone missing after getting involved with some shady characters, and she is entrusting Colt to find him to save Jody's film production within the next 48 hours. Colt then goes to his car and reminisces about his time with Jody while listening to Taylor Swift and crying before Jody shows up, and he has to act cool. She gets in the car with him and talks about how important the film is to her, and he promises not to derails the production for her.
Colt goes to Ryder's apartment to try to find him but is attacked by Iggy Star, Ryder's girlfriend and leading actress in "Metalstorm." After walking around a bit, Colt discovers that Iggy is using a prop sword and then tries to explain that he is looking for Ryder for the sake of the movie. Iggy tells him to go to a nightclub that Ryder frequents and look for his drug dealer.
Colt enters the club dressed flamboyantly and meets the drug dealer, Doone. When Colt asks about Ryder, Doone gives Colt a drugged drink and tries to have his guys deal with him. Colt starts stumbling but manages to fight off three goons before chasing after Doone outside as he tries to hail a taxi. Colt jumps in front of the taxi and prevents Doone from escaping. He tells Colt that he was paid to drug him and directs him to a hotel to find someone named Kevin and ask for a "fruit plate." Colt also hallucinates seeing a unicorn.
In the hotel, Colt encounters Jody, who tells him that the studio is interfering with the love story in her film. Colt then meets the janitor, Kevin, who gives him a "fruit plate," which is just the key to Ryder's hotel room. After some failed attempts with the door key, Colt breaks into the room by kicking the door down. Jody calls him and talks to him about some ideas for the film while teasingly joking around. Subsequently, Colt finds the corpse of another stuntman, Henry Herrera. Colt calls Gail, who advises him not to talk to the police but he does anyway because an officer approaches him for illegally parked. When Colt mentions the body in the ice bath, they return to Ryder's room and find the bath completely empty... and Colt still gets a ticket.
On the next day of shooting, Dan complains that Jody got inspired by everything she talked about with Colt, as she now has bigger and more elaborate ideas for the shooting. Colt fills in for Ryder so they can use deepfake technology and add Ryder's face to the final product. Later, Jody invites Colt to go out for karaoke, which he accepts.
On the way to karaoke, Colt encounters Alma Martin, Tom's personal assistant, along with a trained dog named Jean-Claude it worked with. When he asks Alma about Ryder, she says she last saw him and Henry at a wild party before Gail called her to leave. Alma put her hands on Ryder's phone as his head of security, Dressler, was bothering her about it. She knows there's something criminal going on and is willing to report it, but she tells Colt that she wants producer credit on "Metalstorm." She says she'll see what she can do before Dressler mocks both of them and kidnaps Alma in his van. Colt grabs Jean-Claude and steals a truck to chase after them, while Jody is at the karaoke bar waiting for him and disappointed that he's not there. Jody continues to perform "Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)" while Colt fights the goons after he and the dog catch up to their van. Jean-Claude bites the goons in the balls before going to the front to help Alma get rid of the driver goon. They manage to stop the car, and Colt crashes into the windshield but is okay. He then runs with the dog to the karaoke bar, only to find Dan there, and he says Jody left a long time ago.
Colt and Dan give Ryder's phone to their crewmate, Venti, to hack, but she needs his password. The guys go to Ryder's apartment and search through his array of sticky note reminders until they manage to find the password written in plain sight. After Venti unlocks the phone, Colt and Dan find a video of Ryder, Iggy, and some of their friends with Henry, who jokes about Ryder not doing his own stunts. Ryder is seen trying to do a trick, only to accidentally knock Henry down and kill him. Moments later, Venti calls Dan to inform the guys that the news is reporting on Henry's death and naming Colt as the prime suspect. Soon, Dressler and his goons show up and open fire on Colt and Dan, who quickly act. Dressler ends up shooting and destroying Ryder's phone from Colt's hands. They fight off some goons as Colt comes out and jumps onto Ryder's boat, crashing onto the roof. He then comes face to face with Ryder before going unconscious.
Colt wakes up and finds himself tied up, and Ryder demands that he give back his phone. He admits to killing Henry and setting Colt up to be the fall guy for the crime, as well as informing him that the whole cover-up was Gail's idea after he cried to her. Ryder also admits that he arranged for Colt's accident because he felt Colt was stealing his spotlight. This all happens just as Gail goes to meet Jody to tell her that Colt is the suspect in Henry's murder. After Colt admits that Dressler destroyed the phone, Ryder has his goons douse Colt in kerosene to set him on fire, but he gets some in his mouth and spits it onto Dressler when he tries to ignite it. Colt jumps onto a boat and tries to escape as it sails backward. He tries to contact Jody, but Gail purposely drenches her phone before Jody can answer his call. Colt finally manages to reach Jody and tries to explain himself, but the villains chase him down and make his boat crash and explode, although he manages to jump to safety. Colt is presumed dead and considered a suicide, while the villains use deepfake technology to use Colt's face on Ryder's body in the video showing Ryder killing Henry.
Colt approaches Dan and receives help to return to the set disguised as a movie alien. Jody punches him because of the confusion before it is revealed. Before Colt can explain himself, Jody hugs him and kisses him, but the moment is ruined with Gail outside. Jody hides Colt and overhears Gail talking about Colt's supposed death, as well as trying to do the big car jump trick for Jody's film in VFX and focusing on Ryder's epic final monologue. After Gail leaves, Colt and Jody hatch a plan to make Ryder confess to the murder by asking him to do the jump himself as they will be using a microphone, and he usually forgets that he's being recorded, so he always says whatever he wants unfiltered.
The crew prepares for the big scene and films Ryder's monologue. Jody puts Ryder in the car, telling him they need a close-up of him. Colt reveals himself and drives away with the car, causing Dressler and his goons to chase him. Jody and Dan help keep the goons away from Colt long enough for him to get Ryder to admit to killing Henry and say that Gail came up with the frame-up before Colt performs the epic jump through a cannon, leaving Ryder knocked out. Gail then gets a helicopter to come pick her and Ryder up after she steals his confession tape. With Jody's help, Colt is flung onto the helicopter and fights Gail and Ryder until he retrieves the tape and jumps onto a mat placed by the crew at the right moment. Colt and Jody celebrate their victory with a kiss.
"Metalstorm" finally hits theaters with Jason Momoa replacing Ryder as the lead actor. The movie becomes a blockbuster, and Alma gets her producer credit. Colt says that while the heroes in the movie got their happy ending, he and Jody got theirs too.
The credits roll, showing the stunts featured in the movie. At the end, we see the police coming to arrest Ryder and Gail after their helicopter crashes. They are met by the main police officers (Lee Majors and Heather Thomas, the stars of the original "Fall Guy" television show), but Ryder runs back onto the set to try to get help. This triggers the pyrotechnics and causes Ryder to explode, leading Alma to call Momoa's agent.
